Now, here’s a surprise treat … hot on the heels of Liz Fielding, I’m delighted to welcome Kate Walker, who has popped by to talk about the new edition of her 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance. If you’re interested in writing romance and haven’t yet come across it, I urge you to get yourself a copy. It’s a wonderfully clear and helpful guide, and whenever anyone writes to me asking for advice on writing, Kate’s book is what I recommend - she says it better than I ever could!
It sounds as if it’s all happening on Kate’s website this week, unlike here where I will have to have my head down for a while, so if you want some fun, do go along to her party - and if you’re really lucky, Sid will pick out your name to win a copy of the guide for yourself!
Kate’s going to be back in September, and I’m really looking forward to chatting to her properly then, but in the meantime, let’s help her celebrate the second edition of a really great book … So thank you, Kate, and enjoy those parties!
My thanks to Jessica for inviting me to guest on her blog this week at what is a very special time for me when I'm able to announce that the brand-new, second edition of the 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance is being published this week, starting with a launch party over on my blog, and another at the London Book Fair. I'm really thrilled to be able to say that this second edition is being published and I've been working hard to make it even bigger and better than the first one.
Why did I want to write a second edition?
Well, first there's the obvious reason - the fact that the first edition sold out. That meant that no one can get a copy any more, unless they found one second-hand. Even Amazon doesn't have any used copies available.
Well - they do - if you want
a. A copy sent from Lebanon. I think that's Lebanon NY
b. A used copy for £60-82 - £60-82!!!!
c. A 'like new' copy for £67 - 40
I think not!
And no way am I claiming that my book is worth 6 - nearly 7 times what it originally cost.
Then there was the fact that some of the information in the original edition needed updating - for example, there were the names of some lines - Mills and Boon 'Tender Romance' was back to being just Mills & Boon Romance. And Silhouette Romance had merged with that line to be Harlequin Romance.
Then there was the Modern Extra line which is now selling as Modern Heat.. Nothing stays exactly the same in romance publishing for very long. And that includes the focus of the different lines, there are changes in the guidelines and the things that editors are looking for in submissions.
So obviously it was time to plan a second edition.
But I also decided that if I was going to bring out a second edition, it was going to be an improved and expanded new edition as well as a revised one. I know a lot about writing romance but there are some things that only the authors who write for specific lines really know about.
And so I decided that the best way to make the book even more helpful would be to include advice from the horses' mouths so to speak. Only I didn't call it that - I called this new section From The Authors' Desks. I sent out questionnaires to lots of my wonderful friends who write romance for many different lines - and 21 of them answered.

SO I'm thrilled to be able to say that the new edition is not only revised and updated, it also has this 40+ pages extra with advice and tips from 21 currently published authors. Authors like Michelle Reid, Anne McAllister, Sandra Marton in Presents, Liz Fielding, Natasha Oakley, in Romance, Trish Wylie and Julie Cohen in Modern Heat (Trish in Romance too!) - and Kate
Hardy in Mod Heat and Medicals - along with Gill Sanderson and Margaret McDonagh. And in Historicals there's Nicola Cornick and Michelle Styles. . .. and that's only as a taster. There's also Holly Jacobs from Harlequin Everlasting - er - Superromance (see there's another of those lines that came and went) and Yvonne Lindsay from Desire. Hopefully, whatever line you're aiming for you'll find something to help you there.
And it won't cost you £ 67-00 - I promise!
No, this new expanded edition will be exactly the same price as the first edition - that's £10.99 in UK money
.
As I said, I will be holding a special launch party on my blog with many of the authors who contributed to the From the Authors' Desks section joining me in the celebrations - and many of them are offering prizes too. So don't miss out on that. And I'll be answering questions in the Writers' Q&A as well. So I hope I'll see you here.
Oh -and as I've been asked for these details - here's what you need if you want to order the 12 PGTWR 2
The details you'll need are:
12-Point Guide to Writing Romance(Studymates Writers Guides)
By Kate Walker
2nd Rev Ed edition Pub April 8th
RRP: £10.99
Publisher: Studymates Ltd
ISBN: 978-1842851319
In America you should be able to order it from Barnes & Noble, Borders, Chapters/Indigo - just tell them to order it through Transatlantic Publishers.
But if you want a chance to be one of the very first people to own a signed copy of this brand new edition, then I have one that I'm offering as a prize here on this blog.
I don't know if you've ever visited my web site then you'll know that the way I pick the winners for my contests is that I don't pick them - my cat Sid does! I put all the names on pieces of paper with a cat treat on the top of each one, and the first one that Sid picks is the winner. So Sid will be picking a winner for me for this prize - and I'll throw in a signed copy of one of my Presents books and a special Kate Walker book bag as well. All you have to do is to post in the comments section - tell me about your writing, what lines you're aiming for - or why you'd like to win the 12 Point Guide - I'd love to hear from you. And so would Sid - the more answers we get, the more cat treats he has to eat his way through!
And if you get a chance I hope you'll come along to the launch party over on my blog - there will be more prizes to win over there too. Hope to see you there.
And thanks again for inviting me Jessica- I'll be back later to help you celebrate your very special 50th book - but in the meantime, very many congratulations on reaching this special 'golden' milestone title! Here's to 50 more.
Kate
Thank you, Kate! |

| Kate, on Jessica's recommendation, I have your 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance and have even persuaded our local library to acquire a copy. Without it, I would have had great difficulty getting a professional proposal and query letter together when I finished my book, not to mention the book itself. It's a great resource for aspiring writers, so a big thanks. |

| Hi Juanita - and thank you. I'm thrilled to know that you have a copy of the 12 Point Guide and thank you so much for persuading your library to buy a copy. That's wonderful. I really hope it helps you with your writing - and if you have any success that you'll let me know. Message to all readers -I'm just about to set of for London and the real launch party for 12PGTWR2 at the London Book Fair but I'll call back in here when I'm home - late Thursday - and answer anyone who's commented by then. And then I'll get Sid on the job of choosing a winner. Hi Jessica - waving as I dash in and out. See you soon, Kate |

| Am very envious of the idea of a real launch party ... and at the London Book Fair too! It sounds v glamorous (so unlike one's own life at present!)One of the things I find most impressive about your 12 Point Guide is how clearly you're able to analyse the process of writing. I can think about the plotting process, but it's harder to understand how I actually write. I wonder sometimes if writing is a bit like riding a bike: if you think too hard about it, you can't do it any more. Clearly that wasn't the case for you, though, Kate, but did writing the guide change the way you approached writing romance at all? |

| Hi Kate, I have a very well thumbed copy of the Straightforward Guide to Writing Romantic Fiction! When I started off writing I thought I was aiming for the Temptation line, then I switched to Modern but I finally realised that my voice is more Romance. I've had several full requests since I first submitted in June 2003 but I'm not quite there yet! I'll definitely be getting a copy of the 12 point second edition because it sounds wonderful! |

| Hey Kate, I've been writing for a while now and having been looking at short courses to help with how I would pull things together and bring together professional proposals etc and have been recommended your book because I was looking for something along the lines of my very well thumbed Writers & Artists Handbook for the fiction genre... Hopefully I'll be able to find a copy nearer than Lebanon (NY...) :) |

| Hi Kate and Jessica! I'm completely new to writing. I've read M&B's for many years and have been thinking about trying to write one for a long, long time! I know it's not going to be easy but I'm looking forward to the challenge. And Kate, absolutely everyone I've spoken to about writing has recommended your 12 Point Guide! |

| Hi Kate, I'm a HUGE fan of the M&B Medical line - gotta love those dark doctor types! I've attempted to write a couple of mss but never actually completed any or submitted anything. I keep telling myself I will one day. In the meantime, I'm making sure I read plenty of Meds, using the excuse that it's all good research! |

I got loit several times.
I'll be posting a full report and pix on my blog later today.. And I had good news about some foreign sales too. So now I'll answer some questuions and cooments.

|

| Jessica - firstly, thank you for the huge compliments on the 12PGTWR. It's funny but I never really realised how I could analye the process of writing until people - on eHalrequin or mesage boards etc - started asking me questions. When I was trying to answer and to make the answers as clear and straightforward as possible, I found that then people seemed to understand. So when i was writing the 12 Point Guide I treated it as if someone was asking me the questions and answered them in the points. Someone once said that reading it was like having a conversation with me about writing. And that's just how I wanted it. But when I'm writing I use a very different mind-set. The 'writing teacher' is analytical and dissecting - the novel writer is emotinal and - hopefully - flowing (though not always!) I know that I've broken down the process into these steps - but I also know that when I'm writing I jump into doing things instinctively and on a good day don't need those points at all. But when I'm stuck I go back through the processes and technique's I've described.. I think the Guide is more the way that I used to do things when I was starting out and looking at things and trying to work out how they were done. Now I hope to be able to do those processes with the instinct of 50+ books - but it doesn't always work out that way! Kate |

| Hi Nikki, thank youi for buying the original 12PGTWR - I hope it's helped you understand something more of the writing process and how a book is put together. Your story about aiming at different lines as you learned more about what you were doing is a great example of hoiw important targetting is - you need to recognise where your voice fits and what sort of romance you were meant to write. Very often it's the line you love best, but sometimes it's exactly the opposite. I've been published in both Presents/Modern and Romance way back in the past but I know now that my home is in Modern. |

| Kate, your comments about eharlequin reminded me of how much you helped me when I first started writing! I think you were the first author I'd ever spoken to and you provided me with so much advice and support. I haven't been on eharlequin in a very long time because I was studying as well as working full time so writing took a back seat last year but I made a lot of friends on there and learnt an awful lot about writing. I also remember you encouraging me to join the RNA so I could submit to the New Writers Scheme, So, thanks! |

I also understand that Amazon.com will be taking it and probbaly Barnes and Noble in America. The Writers and Artists handbook is good - but perhaps more general. I hope my boko will help you when you find it - ofr if Sid is nice to yoi and picks your name |

| Hi Jan - and good luck starting out on writing. It's a challenge and the journey can seem long and hard but we've all be through it and we all understand the pain of rejection - don't we Jessica? - and the worry if we're doing this right,. That's why I decided to write the 12PGTWR in the hope it would help would-be authors work through some of the most common mistakes. How wonderful that it has had such a word of mouth reputation. If you do have good luck with your writing I hope you 'll let us know. |

| Ah, rejection ... never a good feeling. Sadly, it doesn't end on the writing front once you get your first manuscript accepted. There are revisions to do and ideas turned down and bad reviews and abject failure in competitions ... plenty to keep a writer's ego battered! On the other hand, nothing beats finishing a book and then hearing that somebody has enjoyed it, and I hope you will all experience that for yourselves as it's a wonderful feeling. Almost as wonderful as typing 'The End' just before a deadline ...

Kate, thank you so much for stopping by, and for all the helpful advice you share in the writing community. I hope the 12 Point Guide continues to be a huge success and will look forward to the fourth and fifth editions! |

| Ooops! I thought I'd get back in here again yesterday to finish my replies - but life conspired against me. I meant to say to Helen that I admire the people who can write Medicals, it's a very special skill and one that I don't have, even though my father was a doctor. Good luck with your writing - the problem is that you do need to complete a full ms and sumit it to have a chance - and then that submission means you risk rejection - but it's the only way. But you're doiong the best sort of preparatory work possible - by reading. Good luck! Kate |

| Life isn't getting any less hectic - ut I must just say Hi again to Nikki (I thought that was you!) And to Jessica - you said the R word! If only that was never a part of our lives - it just transmogrifies into 'Revisions' . But as you say nothing beats turning in a book - before a dreadline? Have I ever done that? Onceor twice maybe! Right, I'm off to round up a cat and get him to pick the name of the winner of the 2nd edition of the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance. I hope I won;t be long - but Sid has just gone outside - so I'll see you when I've persuaded him to pick me a winner. Kate |
